Prague private Jewish quarter tour with Supreme Prague

Private Prague Jewish quarter tour

Your private Prague Jewish quarter tour begins at the Cartier shop on the corner of Pařížská Street to the Old Town square.

Your guide begins with the bigger picture — the thousand-year story of Jewish life in Prague. From the earliest Jewish settlers who arrived in Bohemia in the 10th century, through centuries of persecution and periods of remarkable flourishing, to the devastating impact of the Holocaust (and later Communism on what was left) and the community's survival today.

You'll learn how Prague's Jewish Quarter became one of the most vibrant centres of Jewish intellectual and cultural life in all of Europe.

On private Prague Jewish quarter tour learn about:

  • why is the Jewish quarter named Josefov
  • who/what is Golem
  • where and when did the Jewish settlers come to Prague
  • what is actually left of the historical Jewish qhetto
  • who and when invented the use of the "Jewish badge of shame"
  • and much more of the history and present life of the Prague Jewish community

On private Prague Jewish quarter tour you will visit:

The Maisel Synagogue

The Maisel Synagogue tells the story of Jewish life in Bohemia and Moravia through an extraordinary collection of ceremonial objects, manuscripts, and historical artefacts. Built in 1592 by Mordechai Maisel — the wealthiest man in Prague and financier to Emperor Rudolf II — the synagogue reflects a period when Prague's Jewish community reached the height of its influence and cultural achievement.

The Pinkas Synagogue

Built in 1535, the Pinkas Synagogue carries one of the most overwhelming memorials in the world. After World War II, the names of aprx 80 000 Jewish victims of the Holocaust from Czechia were painstakingly inscribed on its interior walls — name by name, town by town, in a testament to individual human lives rather than abstract statistics.

The Old Jewish Cemetery

Used from the early 15th century until 1787, the cemetery contains approximately 12,000 tombstones — but estimates suggest up to 80,000 people are buried here, in up to twelve layers of graves stacked one upon another because the community had no space to expand.

The Old-New Synagogue — Europe's Oldest Active Synagogue

Your guide will bring you to the Old-New Synagogue — the oldest active synagogue in Europe, in continuous use since 1270. This extraordinary Gothic building has survived fires, pogroms, wars, and communist rule — and still holds regular services today.

The Spanish Synagogue

Your private Prague Jewish quarter tour concludes at the Spanish Synagogue  — and it is the perfect ending. Step inside and prepare to be completely astonished. Built in 1868 in a stunning Moorish Revival style inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, the Spanish Synagogue is Prague's most visually spectacular synagogue — its interior an overwhelming explosion of geometric patterns, rich gold and red ornamentation, intricate tilework, and colored stained glass that fills the space with extraordinary light.

Your guide shows and explains everything in each site, then you get free time to explore the exhibition on your own. How long you spend in each synagogue (and it the end how long the tour lasts) depends on how much time you spend at each site.

Please note there is a security check at the entrance to each site, there might be (longer) queues. Do not bring bags/suitcases, weapons (incl. pepper spray).
